Abstract: Geoscientists are a critical piece of the puzzle needed to address the world’s most complex global challenges, yet it is likely that many geoscience jobs will go unfilled as the numbers of geoscience graduates are not able to replace a retiring workforce. It is more important now than ever to increase the numbers of students that we bring into our lecture halls, set up in our labs, and take out to outcrops. Considering new ways of not only teaching geoscience concepts but cultivating geoscience interest is likely the first step in increasing the number of undergraduate students finding their way onto geoscience pathways. Field experiences, both virtual and traditional, may be one method for allowing students to explore the world around them and support the growth of geoscience interest. The impact of these experiences, drawing from sample sizes of 4 to 1600, will be explored to better understand how we may recruit the next generation of geoscientists.
