Career Information for Geologists

Salaries for geologists are on the rise, and there is an ongoing shortage of geologists in industry. The M.S. is generally regarded as the professional degree in geology, and it typically offers higher salaries and a faster track for promotion. However, the B.S. degree (undergraduates) often find employment immediately after graduation in environmental, mining, and petroleum-related areas. Positions are also available in academia and with state and federal agencies, such as geological surveys and environmental protection divisions. Demand for geologists is increasing, as are salaries, although hiring can be cyclical in some areas. 

Now is a great time to become a geologist. The American Geological Institute has an excellent description of careers in the geosciences and the U.S. Department of Labor has websites on career opportunities for geoscientists and similar occupations.

  • Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Exam

    BS in Geology: The BS in Geology prepares students for employment immediately after graduation or for more advanced graduate study in the geosciences. Students with a BS in Geology are prepared to take the Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Exam, an official credential, and a prerequisite to final licensure status as a Professional Geologist. The Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) administers the Fundamentals of Geology exam, https://sos.ga.gov/event/asbog-examination

     

  • Practice of Geology (PG) Exam

    MS in Geology: The MS is the professional degree in Geology.  It opens up careers in industries dedicated to exploration of natural resources (energy, metals, minerals, water), in public-sector regulation and protection of the environment, and in environmental remediation.
