GEOL 8370

Data Analysis in the Geosciences
Credit Hours:
3

The principles of data analysis, including data collection methods, graphical presentation, and basic statistics.

Through lectures, in-class demonstrations, and computer-based homework problems, students will learn the fundamentals of statistics as applied to common geological problems. Emphasis will be placed on the underlying assumptions of statistical analysis and common univariate and bivariate parametric and non-parametric tests. Students will be evaluated on exams that evaluate theoretical statistical concepts and their correct application to geological problems, and on homeworks that emphasize the application of statistical tests to actual geological data.
