Speaker: Eric Kirby Dr. Kirby is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an internationally recognized expert in the deformation of the Earth’s crust along active faults and landscape response to uplift. Dr. Kirby’s present research is aimed at understanding the interplay of tectonics, erosion and climate along the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau, in the Taiwan mountain belt, along the Cascadia plate boundary in the Pacific Northwest, and in eastern California. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC in 2020, Dr. Kirby held the R.S. Yeats Chair of Earthquake Geology and Active Tectonics in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University. From 2017-2020, he served as the Associate Dean for Academic Programs in CEOAS and oversaw the health and functioning of academic programs in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Geography, and Ocean Science. Prior to joining Oregon State in 2013, Dr. Kirby taught on the faculty of the Department of Geosciences at Penn State University, first as Assistant Professor (2002-2008) and then Associate Professor (2008-2013). During his tenure at both institutions, he mentored students at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. His students have gone on to leadership roles in industry (ExxonMobil Upstream Research), government (USGS), academia (Northern Arizona University; Freie Universität Berlin; University of California, Santa Barbara; University of Connecticut; and Zhejiang University, China) and to productive careers in environmental and geotechnical consulting.
