On January 26th, we said goodbye to a legend. A dedicated educator and mentor to thousands, Dr. Gilles Allard will be remembered for his expertise, wisdom, generosity, and, undeniably, his humor. He was, and will always be, a most beloved professor of the UGA Department of Geology.

It’s been an honor, Gilles. Thank you.

Dr. Gilles Allard

December 12, 1927- January 26, 2025

During a 50+ year career as a Professor and Explorationist, Gilles produced an unparalleled body of work on ore deposits and plate tectonics and a generation of students who are now leaders in the mineral exploration world. Gilles worked on all 7 continents and was tireless in his desire to better understand and learn how best to find the mineral resources upon which society depends. Over his long career, he was awarded the Duncan Derry medal of the GAC, the A.O. Dufresne award of the CIM, the Grande Prix de Merite award of the AGGQ, and the Jean Descarreaux award of the AEMQ.

We extend our deepest condolences to Gilles’ family.

A funeral mass will celebrate his life on May 17 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at the UGA Catholic Center at 1344 S. Lumpkin Street. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gilles and Bernadette Allard Fund at the UGA Foundation. The Fund supports graduate students in their field research.
