Major & Minor Degrees and Certificates

Geology Undergraduate Degrees

The Department offers three degree tracks, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree, and the Geology Minor. The best strategy for planning your Geology Degree is to set up an appointment with a departmental advisor as soon as possible.

Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program in geology prepares students for geoscience careers immediately after graduation and for more advanced graduate study. We advise most students to pursue a B.S. degree, unless they are certain that they are interested in a non-geological career, such as science education, science journalism, environmental law, etc.

Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) program is designed for students who desire a more flexible program of study than is provided by the B.S. degree. It may be used by those seeking a more liberal education or a background in geology for use in other fields. Common career paths for students with a A.B. degree include science education, science journalism, and environmental law. The A.B. degree is not intended to prepare a student for professional or graduate work in geosciences unless the student takes the additional courses in mathematics, chemistry, and physics required for the B.S. degree.

Minor

The geology minor is intended for students who wish to add background in selected areas of geoscience. The minor is ideal for students pursuing careers in other fields that benefit from additional understanding of earth resources, natural hazards, and the environment, such as biosciences, business, journalism, law, public policy, and education.

Water Resources Certificate

For geology majors interested in an environmental geoscience career, the Water Resources Certificate Program, is an excellent supplement to the Geology B.S. Degree. It is a flexible program that introduces students to a number of fields outside of geology, with many options for tailoring the program to a student's individual interests.
