Six geology-related majors have been selected to receive the UGA Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Research Assistantships in the amount of $1000 each.  The recipients and their respective topics are: 1) Zaak Hinz “Exceptional preservation of Cambrian biota within siliceous concretions in the Conasauga Formation of northwest Georgia”; 2) Reid Jordan “Evaluation of barnacles as high-resolution paleoclimate proxies for the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum”; 3) Tony Moraes “Clay mineral concentration with depth and land use history in the Critical Zone in Calhoun, SC”; 4) Matt Quinn “Applications to prolonging data collection efficiency in stream channels”, 5) David Richards “Rare Earth Elements (REE) and their association with deeply weathered saprolite in the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory, Calhoun, SC”, and 6) Jared Conner “Mushroom biochar properties and applications” They will all present their findings at the CURO symposium in Spring 2017, which features over 400 undergraduate researchers from UGA. These awardees are amongst several other geology majors conducting undergraduate research under the guidance of the UGA Geology faculty.  We look forward to continuing this tradition of mentoring and congratulate everyone for the putting in the extra effort.
